Doll Care

  • What is the difference between a Kanekalon wig and rooted hair?
    • Rooted hair is stiched directly into the vinyl head of the doll with a special sewing machine.  The hair is strung in from the outside and then locked on the inside.  Rooted hair is very durable and very suitable for younger children.
    • A Kanekalon wig is a cap that has the hair fiibers sewn into it which gives a more natural appearance of human hair.  The fibers are mixed together in multiple colors which can show natural highlights, etc.  The cap is then glued onto the doll's head.  The fibers are also much finer which allows for easier hairstyling.  Collectors will most often choose the Kanekalon wig.
  •  How do I maintain rooted hair?
    • The best way to brush a doll's hair that is rooted with with a wire brush with no burls.  Brush the doll's hair as you would your own, starting at the tips and working your way up to avoid tangling.  You can wash the hair on these dolls by rinsing it out gently under flowing cold or lukewarm water.  Be careful not to immerse the entire head into the water because the water can penetrate into the doll's head.  Do not use shampoos and rub the hair gently.  To dry the hair, shake the water out or press it out with a soft towel.  Then let the hair air dry.  Brush as mentioned above.  If by chance water has run into the eyes while washing, just lay the doll down on her face while her hair dries.  Never use a hair dryer or leave the doll to dry in the hot sun because the doll's hair is made of artificial fiber and you risk the chance of melting the hair.
  • How do I maintain a Kanekalon wig?
    • For this type of hair, brush the same way as with rooted hair using a wire brush.  We especially recommend a "wire' brush for the Kanekalon wigs because plastice brushes can cause static.  This hair should be washed in cold or lukewarm water.  A mild shampoo can be used, such a baby shampoo and a conditioner if you choose.  Dry the hair by pressing it out with a soft towel, then let the hair air dry and brush.  The same applies to Kanekalon wigs - do not use a hairdryer or leave in hot sun to dry.  The hair is made of artificial fibers which can melt with direct hot heat.
  •  How do I clean the vinyl parts?
    • You can simply wipe off any dirt with a damp cloth.  If necessary, you can use soap, but be careful to stay away from any chemical cleaning agents because these can cause discolorations.
  •  How do I clean my soft bodied doll?
  • The soft bodied dolls are made from strainable cotton or velours and can be washed off with a damp cloth.  Let air dry for a longer time so that the filling dries.  Soft body dolls are NOT suitable for machine washing.
